If you ask most business owners whether they’re happy with their website, the answer is usually something like:

“Yeah… it looks nice.”

And that’s often the problem.

A good-looking website is important, but it’s only doing half the job. If your website isn’t generating enquiries, phone calls or sales, then it isn’t really working as a business tool.

After more than a decade working with businesses across almost every industry, I’ve noticed the same issues come up time and time again. The good news? Most of them are surprisingly easy to fix.

Your website isn't built around your customer

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is talking about themselves too much. It's understandable. You've worked hard to build your business, so naturally you want to tell people about your history, your values and everything you've achieved. But your visitors are asking themselves one question: "Can this business solve my problem?" Your homepage should answer that within a few seconds. Instead of leading with who you are, lead with how you help. Make it immediately obvious what you do, who you do it for and why someone should choose you. When visitors don't have to work for the answer, they're far more likely to stick around.

You're making people work too hard

Think about the last website you visited. If you couldn't find what you were looking for in a few clicks, you probably left. Your customers do exactly the same. Simple navigation, clear calls to action and well-structured content make a huge difference. People shouldn't have to hunt for your phone number, wonder how to get a quote or guess what happens next. The easier you make it for someone to contact you, the more enquiries you'll receive.

You're getting traffic... but not conversions

A lot of businesses focus on getting more people to their website. That's important, but traffic on its own doesn't pay the bills. I'd much rather have 500 visitors who are genuinely interested than 5,000 people who leave after ten seconds. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from making better use of the traffic you already have. Small changes like improving page layouts, strengthening calls to action or removing unnecessary steps from an enquiry form can have a surprisingly big impact on conversion rates.

Your content isn't answering real questions

Google has become much better at understanding what people are actually searching for. That means businesses need to think less about keywords and more about helping people. Every page on your website should answer a question, solve a problem or explain something clearly. If someone leaves your website feeling more informed than when they arrived, you've already started building trust. That's exactly what Google wants to see too.

Your website doesn't build confidence

Imagine walking into a shop with peeling paint, broken shelves and no staff around. You probably wouldn't stay very long. The same applies online. Outdated information, poor-quality images, slow loading pages, spelling mistakes or an old design all chip away at trust. People make decisions about businesses incredibly quickly. If your website feels neglected, they'll often assume your service is too.

You're not measuring what's happening

This is probably the biggest missed opportunity. Most websites already have the data needed to improve. Tools like Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and Google Search Console can show exactly how visitors are using your website, where they're dropping off and which pages are performing well. Instead of guessing what needs changing, you can make decisions based on real user behaviour. It's one of the quickest ways to improve results without increasing your marketing budget.

Your website should be your hardest-working employee

Your website doesn't take holidays. It doesn't finish at 5pm. It doesn't call in sick. Done properly, it should be working for your business 24 hours a day, generating leads while you're busy doing everything else. That's why we always encourage businesses to think beyond having a website that simply looks good. The real goal is building one that helps your business grow. Because at the end of the day, nobody measures a website by how nice it looks. They measure it by the results it delivers.
