If I had a pound for every time someone told me they were “cutting back on marketing to save money”, I’d probably have enough to pay for another Google Ads campaign.
I understand why businesses think that way. When times get tougher, marketing is often one of the first budgets to be reduced. On paper, it feels like an easy saving.
The reality, though, is often the complete opposite.
The businesses that continue investing in marketing are usually the ones that come out stronger. The ones that disappear from search results, stop advertising and neglect their website often spend the following year wondering where all their enquiries have gone.
Marketing isn’t an expense in the same way your electricity bill is.
It’s an investment in your future pipeline.
Good marketing should generate a return
If your marketing isn't bringing enquiries, leads or sales, then you shouldn't keep throwing money at it. It's as simple as that. But that's not because marketing doesn't work—it's because something in the strategy needs improving. Every pound you invest should have a purpose. Whether it's improving your website, increasing your Google rankings, generating leads through paid advertising or building your brand on social media, the goal is always the same: to create opportunities that help your business grow. When marketing is measured properly, it stops being a cost and starts becoming one of the best investments your business can make.
Doing nothing is rarely the cheaper option
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is businesses choosing not to invest because they're waiting for "the right time." The problem is, your competitors probably aren't waiting. While you're standing still, they're improving their websites, publishing useful content, climbing Google rankings and building relationships with potential customers. Six months later, they're getting the enquiries that could have been yours. Standing still often ends up costing more than taking action.
Your website is working even when you're not
One of the things I love about digital marketing is that it doesn't stop when you leave the office. Your website is still working overnight. Your SEO is still helping people find your business. Your Google Ads are still generating enquiries. Your social media is still building trust. Unlike traditional advertising, digital marketing gives you assets that continue working long after you've invested in them. A well-written service page can generate enquiries for years. A strong SEO strategy builds momentum over time. A high-performing Google Ads campaign can be refined and improved month after month. That's what makes it an investment rather than a one-off cost.
Marketing isn't about doing everything
One mistake businesses make is assuming they need to be everywhere. They think they need SEO, PPC, social media, email marketing, video content, TikTok, LinkedIn and five blog posts every week. The truth is, most businesses don't. The best marketing strategies aren't the busiest ones. They're the most focused. It's about understanding where your customers spend their time and investing in the channels that are most likely to generate results. Sometimes that's Google. Sometimes it's social media. Sometimes it's simply improving the website you already have.
Measure what matters
One of the biggest advantages of digital marketing is that almost everything can be measured. You can see: Where visitors came from. Which pages they viewed. Which campaigns generated enquiries. Which keywords people searched for. How much each lead cost. That means you're no longer relying on guesswork. Instead of asking, "Did our marketing work?", you can ask, "Which part worked best, and how can we do more of it?" That's a much better conversation to be having.
Think long term
The businesses we see achieving the best results aren't usually the ones looking for a quick win. They're the ones who consistently invest in improving their online presence over time. SEO takes time. Building trust takes time. Creating useful content takes time. But when all of those pieces start working together, the results compound. That's when businesses stop chasing leads and start attracting them.
Invest in growth, not just survival
Every successful business reaches a point where it has to make a decision. Do you simply maintain what you've already built? Or do you continue investing in growth? Marketing should never be viewed as money disappearing out of the bank. Done properly, it's money being invested into making your business more visible, more competitive and more profitable. That's why I don't see marketing as an expense. I see it as one of the smartest investments a business can make.
